Gamblers aren't allowed to smoke at the slots or tables for the first time in the 30-year history of legalized gambling in Atlantic City.
It's only due to last 12 days, but a temporary smoking ban took effect Wednesday morning in the city's 11 casinos.
The City Council didn't move fast enough to pass an ordinance delaying the ban from taking effect for a year. The ban may end on Oct. 27.
In April, the council passed an ordinance banning smoking from the entire casino floor. Casinos could set up enclosed smoking lounges away from the slot machines and table games.
But casino owners say the crashing economy and plunging revenues justify delaying the smoking ban for at least a year.
