4 L.I. Beaches Closed Because Of Bacteria Fears

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ― Storm water runoff following a series of thundershowers has led Nassau County officials to close four south shore beaches because of concerns about high levels of bacteria.

Closed until further notice are two beaches in Massapequa, the Biltmore Beach Club and Phillip Healy, as well as the Hewlett Point and Island Park beaches in the "Five Towns" area.

Health department officials warn that storm water runoff into the Great South Bay often causes elevated bacteria levels.

The National Weather Service predicts heavy rain could cause flash flooding in the metropolitan area through Thursday night.
