NEW YORK (CBS) ― Department store shelves have been stocked with the latest and greatest in hair, skin, and cosmetic creations for spring. But how do you find the best of the best in this barrage of beauty products?

"Eye shadow, blushes, lipsticks. The colors are always changing," said one shopper.

"I'm looking for something that's going to make my hair bouncy and clean," said another.

Self Magazine asked readers, like these, to test over a thousand new products, in all prices ranges, and rate the best of the best. "Everything that you can find in the department store, the drug store, as well as niche brands that you can just buy, you know, on Web sites," explained Self's Leah Wyar.

If you want a fresh, clean face before stepping out, Skin Effects Calming Gel Cleanser left testers soothed and smoothed. Lancôme's anti-aging moisturizer also came out on top.

And for zapping zits? "The Sephora Face Concealing Blemish Pen won because it contains salicylic acid to dry up the acne, but it's also going to offer some concealing," said Wyar.

The winning all-around foundation by Shiseido left readers with beautiful, balanced skin. And, Cosmedicine's tinted moisturizer was voted simply stunning. "Because it had a lighter weight formula. It didn't feel tacky or heavy like some of the others did," said product tester, Elizabeth Brownfield.

To give your skin a hint of tint, Lancaster's self-tanner glowed.

To add some color to your kisser, the winning lipsticks: Almay's Hydracolor and Armani-silk. "It actually contains actual silk fibers," said Wyar.

For "eye-mazing" results, Victoria's Secret very sexy mosaic eye shadow and Bobbi Brown's cream shadow swept the competition.

For hair help, readers felt like they had just stepped out of a salon after using Aura Spa Balancing Verbena Ginger Shampoo, along with the winning conditioner.

"The Charles Worthington dream hair conditioner was great because it contained these pearl pigments, so it left the hair with a really beautiful luster," said Wyar. These are recommendations from women all across the country.
