A wild police chase ended with gunshots in Newark early Thursday morning, sending an officer and a suspect to the hospital.
Cops tried to arrest two men about 2:15 a.m. outside a Burger King on Broadway after they spotted the suspects attempting to break into cars in Belleville.
The suspects sped away, driving south into Newark where they tried to run down a Belleville officer on Herbert Place, injuring his arm. The officer fired shots into the vehicle and hit one of them as they drove deeper into Newark.
One eyewitness, who only identified himself as John, saw everything go down.
"All I heard was a bunch of sirens come over here," John told CBS 2. "I saw all kinds of radio cars, about 15 of them."
The suspect who was shot presumably lost control of his car before he ran up on the curb and left tire tracks in the grass. Their vehicle crashed into the tree, and the passenger tried to flee the scene.
"They had one guy over there on the corner, by the tree, handcuffed," John said. "They had somebody laid out here unconscious right by that car."
The injured suspect is in critical condition at an area hospital with a head injury. The Belleville police officer who narrowly escaped being run down suffered a non-life threatening arm injury.
