N.J. Trio Charged In Black Magic Attack On Girl

Yenitza Colichon & 2 Others Accused Of Cutting Blindfolded 7-Year-Old All Over To Cloak Her With Mystical Protection

Chickens And A Goat Sacrificed During "Palo Mayombe" Ritual

PATERSON, N.J. (CBS) ― A religious ritual turned into a suspected case of child abuse. Police said three people were charged with cutting a 7-year-old girl inside a home.

It's called "palo mayombe." It's called one of the most powerful and feared forms of black magic, which police said was practiced by a New Jersey trio on a child.

"It's crazy, it's sick," neighbor Iliana Cruz told CBS 2 HD.

Authorities said Yenitza Colichon wanted to cloak her daughter with mystical protection and approached Julio Cano, a priest who practices palo mayombe, and his wife. The session took place in Cano's Paterson home in the basement because, according to palo mayombe, that's the perfect place to work and welcome the spirits.

Investigators said as part of the ritual the 7-year-old received cuts to different parts of her body -- her wrists, back, arms, legs, you name it. In all she was cut 10 times and she was blindfolded the entire time.

Police also said the child's clothes were cut off, cold water was poured on her, and if that wasn't bad enough, she was forced to watch a goat and chickens be sacrificed.

"Who would do something like that to a little kid?" neighbor Rachel Vega said. "I mean, if they want to do it with a grown-up, fine, but not with a little kid."

The little girl was so traumatized she told her school teacher who then called authorities.

"She seems like a nice lady," neighbor Sara Conger said of Colichon.

Colichon and her daughter live in a Jamesburg apartment complex.

"It makes me think about all these parents now, what they're doing with their kids when I'm not around. Not cool," neighbor Tania McAvoy said.

A search warrant recovered religious statues, bones, machetes, sticks with names and residual blood on some of the items -- all inside a home where this neighbor noticed everyone in the backyard dressed in white gowns not too long ago.

"The music would stop and then you'd hear the chanting, and they'd stop and the music would go back on," Alisha Torres said.

Now the music has stopped. A mother is in jail, her daughter scarred with a memory she may never forget.

The child is in state custody, being cared for by an aunt.

The three suspects have been charged with child endangerment.
