Bloomberg Says Spitzer's Budget Shortchanges NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ― New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposed state budget shortchanges the city by about $500 million and, at this point, breaks funding promises in education and social services.

Bloomberg says he will work with the powerful New York City coalition in the state Assembly and its counterpart in the Senate to restore the funding.

Spitzer proposes a $124 billion state budget that holds the line on spending to about 5 percent. It makes what Spitzer says are the hard choices in hard fiscal times.

But Bloomberg says the governor and Legislature aren't looking hard enough at efficiencies and cuts that can ease the impact on education and other areas.
