With the fate of Joe Torre up in the air after the Yankees' season-ending loss to Cleveland, Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared Tuesday that he would bring the manager back next year if it were up to him.
The ever-positive mayor also still has faith in Mets manager Willie Randolph, whose team collapsed last week and blew its lead, missing the playoffs entirely.
"You know, sometimes the ball just doesn't go out of the park, sometimes the pitch doesn't go over the plate," Bloomberg told reporters.
"And you can have great people and great coaching and
it's just not meant to be."
Bloomberg has said he is counting on having a subway series while in office.
The mayor, in his second term, has just two baseball seasons left to reach his goal. George Steinbrenner said last weekend he didn't think he'd bring Torre back unless New York rallied to win the first-round series.
The 77-year-old owner has not spoken publicly since the Game 4 defeat.
The New York Post on Tuesday warned "Torre faces ax," and the Daily News predicted he's "Outta here," but Bloomberg made a pitch to save him.
"I'm a big Joe Torre and Willie Randolph fan, and in both cases I think they could run anything, and I would love to see them" back next year, Bloomberg said. "I don't get a vote in any of this but if I owned the teams, that's what I would do."
