Woman, Teen Son Found Dead In Queens Closet
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A shocking confession came after a brutal double murder in a Queens apartment. Now, a husband is in custody and expected to be charged with murder, for allegedly killing his wife and 14-year-old son and hiding their bodies in a closet.
Late Saturday night, outside of the 115th Precinct stationhouse, Jose Pur was in shock after learning his brother-in-law, Otto Herrarte, was in police custody. Police say Herrarte had confessed to killing his wife, Edna Herrarte, and their 14-year-old son Danny.
"To kill a son? I don't know what else
to kill a wife?" Pur said. "For me, he's like evil no human feelings anymore."
Police believe that sometime Friday, Herrarte slashed the throat of his wife and teenage son, then hid their bodies in the living room of their apartment in the Corona section of Queens.
"In the closet, with their throat cut, they were wrapped in black plastic," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Police say Herrarte waited overnight before coming forward.
"This individual contacted a co-worker earlier today, and asked her to come to his apartment," Inspector Galen Frierson said. "When she found out that this individual had killed his wife and son, she contacted 9-1-1."
Family members say trouble had been brewing for some time.
Herrarte's family says the co-worker he called Saturday morning was his mistress. They believe Herrarte had been trying to get out of his marriage for nearly four years.
Friday night, relatives say, may have been Herrate's desperate way out.
"Otto, he found this other woman he used to be good, he was a model as a father," Pur said. "He used to be very nice, until he met this woman everything changed.
Police say the Herrartes have a 15-year-old son who was not harmed, and that he is at the police station. He is not facing charges.
Herrarte is expected to be officially charged with murder on Sunday.
Police say no neighbors heard any commotion in the apartment, leading investigators to believe that the victims were killed while they slept.
