Bonfire Explodes At NJ High School Pep Rally
VINELAND, N.J. (CBS) ―
An annual pep rally at a southern New Jersey high school nearly turned tragic when a bonfire exploded, scattering numerous wood pallets.
But only one minor injury was reported in Wednesday night's incident at Vineland High School, which has been labeled suspicious.
It was not clear what caused the blast, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., shortly after the bonfire was lit. Students had put together pallets for the bonfire -- under the supervision of school district personnel -- and the Vineland Fire Department was also on scene.
One firefighter was struck in the back of his leg by flying debris, but sustained only an abrasion and was treated at the scene. Meanwhile, firefighters immediately doused the pallets and the remains of the bonfire.
Fire officials said Thursday that they had no idea what may have caused the blast, noting that they followed procedures that had been used safely for decades. They also received numerous calls from startled residents throughout Vineland and in nearby areas who felt or heard the explosion, including some as far as 7 miles from the scene.
The pep rally -- meant to energize fans for Vineland's Thanksgiving Day football game with Millville High School -- continued after the blast AT a site off-campus.
The Vineland Fire Department operates out of six fire stations.
