Dolphins Fine After Busy Holiday Weekend In River

Boaters Ticketed For Speeding, Approaching The Mammals

SEA BRIGHT, N.J. (AP) ― A family of dolphins that has taken up residence in the Shrewsbury River came through the busy holiday weekend just fine.

But the same can't be said for some boaters who got too close to them.

Federal and state authorities wrote several summonses to boaters for going too fast, and another 10 got warnings for coming too close to the bottlenose dolphins.

Wildlife officials had feared heavy boat traffic in the river could endanger the animals over the busy July 4th holiday.

But they decided the risk of trying to move the dolphins outweighed the risk of leaving them where they are, at least for now.
