NJ Tries To Keep Dolphins Safe During Bridge Work

SEA BRIGHT, N.J. (AP) ― New Jersey's Transportation Department will pay a "spotter" $2,000 to determine if bridge work is stressing a pod of wayward dolphins.

But the dolphins may be out of harm's way. No one has seen them since they swam inland into the Navesink River on Tuesday.

The state is planning to demolish the Route 36 Highlands Bridge and replace it with a higher span starting next week. The span crosses the Shrewsbury River, where the dolphins have been feeding over the last few weeks.

The one-day study is to be conducted sometime the week of July 21 when crews test the floor of the river bed to see if piles can be driven there. The spotter will determine whether the dolphins are affected.
