Long Island Boy Shot While Playing Basketball

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBS) ― Police say a 13-year-old boy has been shot in the head while playing basketball in a Long Island park.

Suffolk County police say Wilson Batista Jr. suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting Monday night at Timberline Park in Brentwood. An update on his condition wasn't immediately available Tuesday.

The teen was shooting hoops with friends when several shots were fired in their direction. It's not immediately clear whether the shots were aimed at the basketball players or someone else.

No arrests have been made.

This has been the second shooting in recent weeks that resulted in a local boy being shot while participating in sports.

Davonte Kelly, 11, was shot while posing for photos at a local baseball field in Brooklyn. Kelly was released from the hospital on June 10. His gunman is still on the loose.
