Former NY Official Admits Being Bribed
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) ―
A former town official on Long Island faces two years in jail after admitting he accepted bribes including a free carpet and a fireplace installation in his condo.
Robert Bonerba, Smithtown's former chief building inspector, admitted Wednesday in Suffolk County Court that he took $10,000 cash, plus the carpeting and fireplace, from developers doing business with the town in 2000.
Bonerba also admitted taking $1,000 from another developer in 2004 to look the other way on an illegal apartment.
He is expected to be sentenced to two years in prison on July 16.
Two builders pleaded guilty last year to bribing Bonerba to expedite permits.
