Spitzer Announces State Internet Access Initiative

Broadband Service For All New Yorkers

NEW YORK (AP) ―

Calling broadband Internet access a must for all New Yorkers, Governor Spitzer today announced his plan to provide the service to even the most remote areas of the state.

During an appearance today in Niagara Falls, the governor said he'll create a New York State Council for Universal Broadband to ensure access to affordable, high-speed Internet service for every New Yorker.

He says the state intends to distribute budget funds for grants to research, design and implement the service in unserved and underserved areas of the state. The governor says accomplishing that task will provide all New York residents with the advantage of the economic, social and cultural opportunities the Internet provides."

There's already 5 million dollars in the current budget to promote the plan.

Spitzer is spending the afternoon in Buffalo before heading to Rochester.
