SHOCK VIDEO: Man Robbed, Beaten With Bat In Bronx

Victim Identified As 52-Year-Old Boston Radio Talk Show Host

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A father is fighting for his life after he was robbed and brutally beat by his attackers with a baseball bat, a vicious assault that was captured on surveillance camera.

The incident happened on Sunday around 3:35 a.m. as the victim, identified as Pelagio de la Cruz, a 52-year-old father of three, was waiting to enter an apartment building at 2460 Davidson Ave. in the Bronx.

In the video, the first suspect is seen approaching De La Cruz from behind and smashing him in the head with the bat. The suspect then continues to strike the victim repeatedly, hitting him eight more times before the second suspect arrived and helped his partner in crime steal the victim's wallet and cell phone.

Both suspects fled the scene in a dark colored four-door sedan.

De La Cruz, who works in Boston as a Spanish talk-show radio host for WESX-AM, often comes to the city to visit his children, ages 22, 18, and 15.

"He doesn't have any problems with anybody. He always stays here with us and he goes to work and he comes here. We're always here, we're always together," said Ruta De La Cruz, his 15-year-old daughter.

De La Cruz was transported to St. Barnabas hospital where he's listed in critical condition.

"I couldn't sleep today. They just took a bat and they hit him in the face, just in the face. If you're gonna rob someone, howcome you're gonna hit him until he dies? Because he was almost dying," Ruta said.

No arrests have been made, but police are hoping someone will come forward to help bring the assailants to justice. If you have information regarding the case you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
