The man accused of terrorizing a Brooklyn elementary school will face a judge Thursday. Police say he waved a gun as he entered P.S. 108 in Cypress Hills, and then hid in a bathroom.
With police hot on his tail, alleged armed robbery suspect Edwin Austin ran inside the school seeking shelter. Police say Austin was brandishing his gun while class was in session.
Austin's alleged actions jeopardized the safety of nearly a thousand students, who were ultimately evacuated.
Many young students were seen extremely shaken up or crying as they walked down a nearby sidewalk cordoned off with police tape.
"It was really very scary," said Ashley Mojica, one of the students.
Police caught Austin on the third floor of the school, armed and barricaded in a bathroom.
It was a frantic and scary scene, which had parents fuming over the breach in school security.
"I always tell them at the PTA meeting they need to increase security in the schools. I bet you now they'll have more security, won't they?" said Faith Hardy.
Austin's troubles began when police say he was caught trying to break into a home a couple of blocks away.
When police sighted him they came after him, and he ran toward the school and when he ran toward the school he brandished a gun and he pointed the gun at his head and entered the school," said City Councilman Charles Barron.
