A Brooklyn family is grieving the loss of a 13-year-old boy who was stabbed to death near their home in the Sheepshead Bay section of the borough.
Flowers and a couple of candles in a bucket mark the spot where the boy was fatally stabbed. A young girl, who lives only a few yards away and knows the victim, told CBS 2 the victim was stabbed with a screwdriver.
The incident happened on East 15th at Avenue X. Investigators believe the screwdriver stabbing may have been the result of a weekend argument. Police say after the stabbing, the assailant hopped on a bicycle, and at least two other boys ran off.
The victim, identified as 13-year-old Miguel Saavedra, who just finished seventh grade, lived with his family above a restaurant on Sheepshead Bay Road, where a man identified by neighbors as the boy's stepfather was very evasive, denying he was related to the boy.
Bafar Ali, who lives in the same building, said the boy was a good kid who regularly attended school.
"He didn't look like to be part of a gang as you hear stories that that's what was going on. He was a nice guy and I've never seen him do stuff like that."
Luis Serrano, another teen who knew the victim, stopped to see where it happened.
"It's sad. Now everybody's got to watch their back, even young kids like this," he said.
The question for police now is what was behind the stabbing and who did it? At this point there are no suspects in custody, and the motive of the crime remains unknown.
