Bubble Trouble: Criminals Target Off-Broadway Show
Steal More Than $250,000 Worth Of Concentrated Solution
Act May Halt Production; Show Creator Flabbergasted
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Some "bubble bandits" may prevent a hit off-Broadway show from going on much longer. A quarter of a million dollars worth of bubble solution and toys were stolen by some slick criminals.
No one can come up with a motive for the June 10 theft of 3.4 tons of bubble solution, which consists of distilled water, glycerin and baking soda.
Fan Yang, the creator and star of the "Gazillion Bubble Show," was lost for words about the heist.
"I have no clue, no answer [to] how this happened," Yang said,
The incident occurred at a North Bergen, N.J. public storage business. The lock on the storage unit was cut and 320 big boxes of solution were missing. Sources close to the investigation said security camera footage failed to pinpoint any suspects.
One theory is the thieves cut locks on several storage units to steal anything and determine their value later.
"It's a concentrate, so you have to know [how to] put it together," said Yang, "I mean, you need distilled water to make it work. I was just thinking, who is going to do that?"
Yang is scrambling to get emergency supplies manufactured and shipped from Europe, at a huge expense, to keep the show afloat.
"It's a holiday season, there [are] a lot of kids now. We are going to make this work," Yang said.
Currently there is just enough solution to keep the show going for three more weeks. More solution is being shipped here so that those with pre-paid tickets still get their money's worth.
