6 Injured In Henry Hudson Parkway Bus Crash

Greyhound Coming From Springfield, Mass., Slams Into Overpass In Riverdale Section Of Bronx

Impact Peeled Roof Back Like A Sardine Can

NEW YORK (CBS) ― There was chaos in Riverdale on Friday night as a Greyhound bus carried its passengers into harm's way, slamming into an overpass on the Henry Hudson Parkway.

The FDNY said the bus got wedged near 252nd Street just before 7:30 p.m. Greyhound spokesman Dustin Clark said it was carrying 37 passengers from Springfield, Mass., to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

The impact peeled away the roof and dropped debris onto occupied seats.

The FDNY said six people were taken away by ambulance, but, amazingly, none of the injuries were considered life threatening.

"Thank God I'm alive. I'm not going to lie to you," crash victim William Tedesci said. "I thank God I am alive. I swear to God I was so scared."

The images from inside the bus were astounding.

"All we heard was a big rip through the front coming into the back," Tedesci said.

"I got hit right over here," Tedesci added, pointing to his right wrist, "with a piece of metal that fell down that almost sliced my face right open."

The bus stopped in Hartford, Conn., on the way. It wasn't supposed to be on the Henry Hudson. Passengers told CBS 2 HD the driver seemed determined to make up for lost time and may have not seen the signs for low clearance.

"They have been doing construction on this Henry Hudson Parkway for a while. The overpass is lower," Battalion Chief John Sullivan said. "(The driver) is from Chicago and wasn't familiar with the area and he just got on the wrong highway."

"All I heard was an explosion and the roof of the bus caved in and there were people hurt in the front," victim Colletia Gonzales said. "It was very scary. I still don't believe that this happened."

It took police more than an hour to clear the scene. Clark said Greyhound has dispatched another bus to pick up the 31 passengers that were not transported by ambulance. They had to wait on the side of the road in the rain for the scene to clear.

They finished their trip into Manhattan on a regular city bus.
