Passengers Attack Livery Cab Driver In The Bronx

Latest Incident Is 3rd Assault In Past Month

BRONX (CBS) ― A livery cab driver is in the hospital after being brutally attacked by the two men he was transporting. It's the third attack on a cab driver in the past month.

The driver, looking for a fare Sunday night in the Bronx, ended up the victim of a brutal stabbing in the Pelham Gardens section of the borough.

Lucky for the victim, the incident occurred right outside Vickie Calendar's home, who also happens to be an EMS worker.

"He was conscience. His eyes were open, but he was incoherent. He kind of went in and out of breath. I checked his pulse and prayed he'd breathe," said Calendar.

Police say the victim picked up two men about a block away from where the stabbing occurred, according to what the driver told Calendar's husband. The two men tried to rob the driver.

While trying to escape his attackers, the livery driver hit several cars and was eventually stopped after slamming into a white pickup truck.

"He was trying to get out of the car and get away at the same time…I saw a man stab him in the stomach behind the car," said a witness who wanted to remain unidentified.

After the stabbing, the witness saw the two men run down Hering Avenue and disappear into Eastchest Gardens.

Police are looking for the two men. Meanwhile, the cab driver is in serious condition at Jacobi Hospital.
