6 Injured After 2 Cabs Hit Sidewalk Scaffolding

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A pair of taxicabs collided in the East Village Sunday night, careening into a sidewalk scaffolding and leaving six people injured.

The two cabs crashed and, in the process, brought down the scaffolding, and were left under the mangled mess hours after the accident.

A witness tells CBS 2 that one of the cabs tried to overtake the other before the two collided and careened across Broadway at the corner of E. 8th Street, jumping the curb and coming to rest on the sidewalk under the scaffolding.

Six adults in the two cabs have what are described as minor injuries. Witnesses say the scaffolding came down in slow motion, alerting pedestrians to stay out of the way.

"I think that the first thing that we did, we were just very concerned that people were injured, because there was a lot of tape, a lot of rubble," witness Hayley Stokar said. "You need to assess the situation, make sure that it's even safe to be near it, and make sure no one is injured, which we were told in this case that there was no one that was injured gravely, which is important."

For now, three blocks of Broadway and one entrance to the 8th Street train station are closed. 8th Street is open to traffic overnight, and authorities are working as quickly as possible to clear up the scene in time for the Monday morning rush.
