Clifton Home Destroyed After Car Plows Into It

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBS) ― Police are trying to figure out why a driver lost control of his car and crashed into a Clifton home early Monday morning, making for a terrifying wake-up call for its owner.

The driver of the car drove right into the house at 1 Athenia Ave. destroying everything in its patch. The kitchen is gone, as is the dining room, and what was left of the porch came crashing down while CBS 2 was at the house, which looks like it was hit by a tornado.

Thankfully, the owner wasn't hurt because she was upstairs sleeping. Her dog, "Alfie," we are told was with her, and is doing just fine.

"It was 5 o'clock, somewhere in that time frame. If she was in there, it would have been devastating," said Joe Speranza, part of the construction crew on the scene later Monday. "She's upset. She knows we're here to help her get back on her feet. It's going to be a while. The house will be vacant for a while."

Neighbors said they jumped right out of their beds after the driver lost control near a curve on Athenia Avenue, driving right across the lawn and into the kitchen.

"It's definitely scary," said neighbor Wes MacPhail. "I think the driver went from where he was right into the ambulance."

The impact even caused a door to go flying into a neighbor's yard. Ironically, neighbors said they see a lot of speeders there even though the police department is across the street.

"The previous owners had problems with cars going up the hill and across the lawn," said neighbor Gene Oleniak.

Construction crews said it will be months before the owner can get back into her home. For now, she's just happy she and her dog weren't injured.

The driver, believed to be a 49-year-old man, has not been identified. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

So far, police have not issued a summons.
