Three Dead In Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
WEST BABLYON, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Three people were found dead in a West Babylon home that was recently condemned, but rented out by its landlord anyway. Police say the victims, an adult male, an adult female, and a young girl, died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Town officials are calling the incident a crime, putting the blame squarely on the landlord, who they've dubbed the slumlord of Suffolk County.
The town had condemned the home due to its lack of building and rental permits, and put notice that it was not to be inhabited, citing the landlord, Wilson Milord, and warning him to evict all residents. Properties of his were plagued with violations in three counties.
His rental office is in Brentwood.
Milord tells CBS 2 that he feels terrible for the incident, that he is a father and a family man, but that it was all a horrible accident. He says he did nothing to cause the accident.
He adds that a space heater and a generator were pulled from the home on Sunrise Highway, and were to blame. The home had no heat nor electricity, as tenants in four illegal apartments were trying to warm up.
Building department officials said the house was condemned back in June, and that no one should have been living in it.
There is no word yet if charges will be filed. Stay with wcbstv.com and CBS 2 for the latest in this developing story.
