Child Abuse Cases In N.J. Foster Homes Down
NEWARK (AP) ―
New Jersey has seen a sharp drop in the number of proven child-abuse allegations.
According to the state Division of Youth and Family Services, state investigators last year corroborated three percent of allegations of child abuse in neglect reported in settings outside family homes, including foster homes, schools and day cares.
That's down from 11 percent in 2005. The number of reports has remained steady.
Child-welfare advocates were wondering if the new data is good or bad.
Cecilia Zalkind, executive director of the Association for Children of New Jersey, says she worries that legitimate cases are being screened out. But Judith Meltzer, who is monitoring the state's child-welfare system for a federal judge, says it may be that cases are being classified more appropriately now.
