Mother Charged With Abusing 7-Week-Old

Little Boy Found With Broken Bones, Fractured Skill

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ― Prosecutors say a Queens mother has been charged with attempted murder in the brutal beating of her newborn son.

The Queens District Attorney's office says the 7-week-old boy named Pablo was hospitalized Thursday evening with a broken leg, numerous broken ribs, a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. Some of the injuries appeared to be weeks old.

Pablo's mother, Kiama Paez, is awaiting arraignment on the charges. The 22-year-old woman was arrested earlier Friday at her home in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens. She also faces assault charges. There is no telephone listing for Paez at the number provided by authorities.

Prosecutors say the infant is on life-support and may be brain dead. He was unconscious and having difficulty breathing when his mother brought him to the hospital, authorities said.
