2-Year-Old's Body Found In Plastic Bag In NJ River

Police Investigate Gruesome Discovery Made By Fisherman, Haven't Yet Ruled Case A Homicide

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBS) ― The medical examiner's office is performing an autopsy on a 2-year-old child whose body was found in a New Jersey river over the weekend. Police have yet to rule the case a homicide.

A fisherman made a horrifying discovery in the Passaic River in Clifton on Sunday: the body of a 2-year-old child in a plastic bag.

The fisherman called 9-1-1, getting emergency crews to the scene, but so far investigators haven't released the identity of the toddler.

Workers in the industrial area off of Ackerman Avenue were so devastated that they went out looking for clues.

"When we heard this, we came this morning," worker Paul Casale says. "We actually tried to look inside the river and see if there's anything we could find – nothing."

The body was found partially submerged on the river bank. The caller told 9-1-1 that he opened the plastic bag and made the gruesome discovery.

While the circumstances surrounding the body appear to be suspicious, sources say police haven't ruled the death a homicide. It's possible that the baby died of natural causes, but it's unclear how the body ended up in the river.

"It's terrible," Bob Blumenthal says. "I can't think of anything much worse than this."

"I don't get why someone would to that to a baby, especially [a baby just] two years old," David Nieves says.

For now, cameras pointing toward the water don't appear to reveal anything. Police are continuing their investigation into what they call a "highly sensitive matter."

Police say they won't be releasing any more information because they don't want to compromise their investigation.
