Police are investigating what seems to be a politically-motivated burglary at the office of New York City Councilman Hiram Monserrate.
Authorities say burglars ransacked Monserrate's East Elmhurst office sometime overnight Thursday into Friday. They say the burglary was so peculiar that the councilman is convinced the motive is likely "political dirty tricks."
The culprit or culprits apparently got into the officer after prying the back window open. Monserrate's desk was rifled through and the laptop belonging to his chief of staff was taken.
Monserrate believes it was politically-motivated because many valuable were left behind.
"Obviously this is a very suspicious circumstance," he told CBS 2. "This is not a run-of-the-mill burglary, and it really raises suspicions as to who'd want to come and steal a laptop and a box of envelopes from a councilman's office."
That, Monserrate says, is the oddest part of the crime -- the theft of 400 official envelopes stolen. The laptop also may have confidential information about Monserrate's possible run for the state senate this year.
In the meantime, the office will be fixed up with new locks, new alarms, and new cameras.
