Cold Spring Police Commander Killed In Crash
CARMEL, N.Y. (CBS) ―
The only full-time police officer in the Village of Cold Spring is dead.
Darrell Burris, described as the "commanding officer" on the Cold Spring Police Department's Web site, was killed in a car crash in Carmel, according to Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith.
Carmel town police say the accident was on Drewville Road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Although they would not release any information about the accident, Sheriff Smith confirmed the victim was Burris, calling him "a good cop and a nice man."
Fire officials say Burris was driving his personal vehicle when it collided with another vehicle.
The 38-year-old Burris, who lived in Carmel, was given C-P-R at the scene and pronounced dead at the Putnam Hospital Center.
Village of Cold Spring Mayor Anthony Phillips said he was too distraught to comment.
Cold Spring has a part-time police department, with Burris as the only full-time officer. His 6-foot, 7-inch frame was a familiar sight walking the department's police dog, Duncan, along Main Street each day.
As of Friday morning, the department's Web site still featured several photos of Burris with Duncan. There was also a photo of Burris and Duncan posing with Judith Sheindlin, TV's "Judge Judy," when she stopped at the department while her son, Adam Levy, was in his 2007 campaign for Putnam County district attorney.
Levy won.
