Queens Community Wary Of Wily 'Coyote'

Though Animal Control Won't Say For Sure What It Is, Residents Are Convinced And Hope It's Captured Soon

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Well, is it a coyote? A stray dog? Or what?

A four-legged animal that has been spotted in Queens has people nervous. And talking. And they have the pictures to back it up.

Maybe, somewhere in the more wooded areas around Rochdale Village, maybe … the creature lurks. Traps have been set. But people, like Darnell Brunston have already taken pictures. And they're not waiting to be told what it is. They're giving it a name.

"I saw him the other night. He's taller than me when he stands up on his two hind legs. That is a coyote! I'm a country boy from Georgia. That's exactly what it is," resident Richard Howard said.

Noreen Savage said the idea of some kind of animal roaming around out there makes her nervous and she wants it captured.

Animal Control officers have set up a series of traps. They think they're going to find a stray dog. But you never know.

"I'm not scared, no. Because if you don't attack them, they won't attack you – unless they're hungry," Howard said.

"Unless they're hungry ..." right. Flyers are up in the buildings where the animal has been spotted. And people who ask can get an escort from their car to their building by the public safety guards at Rochdale Village.

When asked if people have been coming in asking for help, public safety officer Rick Nelson said, "Of course they have. Yes, they are scared."

"There are people who park in that lot who have small children. Can you imagine you put your stroller to the side, you're putting your baby in, and the coyote … you turn around, and the coyote's in your stroller?" added resident Tiffany Arrington.

Officials want to see everything before they determine if it is indeed a coyote. But when you talk to folks here they are convinced it is.

CBS 2 HD sent along to Animal Control copies of the pictures neighbors took. They said it was hard to tell if it was a coyote, a stray dog, or a mix.
