'Craigslist Killer' Victim To Be Laid To Rest

Suspected Murderer Markoff Suspected Of Other Attacks

 CBS News Interactive: Crime Beat

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Family and friends will be gathering on Wednesday to remember the victim of the so-called "craigslist killer."

Police said Tuesday night fresh-faced Phil Markoff, who appeared in a Boston courtroom Tuesday morning, was living a lie and leading a predatory double-life.

"Philip Markoff is a man who is willing to take advantage of women -- to hurt them, to beat them, to rob them," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said.

Markoff, a preppy blonde, has been charged in the murder of aspiring Manhattan model, 26-year-old Julissa Brisman, a masseuse who advertised her services on craigslist.

Investigators said he arranged an April 14 meeting at a Boston hotel with Brisman.

Police believe Markoff tied her up, robbed her to pay off gambling debts and then, when she tried to escape, killed her.

"Bashed in the head of Julissa Brisman and shot her three times at close range," prosecutor Jennifer Hickman said.

Brisman's father, Hector, sat in the front row at Tuesday's arraignment of Markoff. He later declined to comment. Brisman is expected to be laid to rest in Washington Heights on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, police continue investigating the man known to friends as the clean-cut, happily engaged medical student at Boston University. Markoff is better known now to the world as the "craigslist killer."

Markoff's fiancée, Megan McAllister, spent the day inside her family's Monmouth County home.

The two were planning a summer wedding at McLoone's Pier House in Long Branch, N.J.

In a statement to news organizations on Tuesday she defended Markoff, saying "Philip is a beautiful person inside and out ... he could not hurt a fly."

Markoff's friends said they never suspected him of being a twisted killer.

"[He's] just a nice guy. This is really ... beyond belief," Tom Fallon said.

"Great kid, smart kid, had a great future ahead of him," Bob Comis added.

Surveillance pictures and a trail of e-mails tie Markoff to at least two other robberies of women who also advertised on craigslist.

Now police say there may be even more victims.

"He probably thought he was going to get away with it," Conley said. "He thought he was too smart for us.

"Our priority is to hold him accountable for each and every one of these crimes."
