Judge Denies Mental Exam For Meat Cleaver Suspect

NEW YORK (AP) ― A Manhattan judge has refused to order an examination to determine whether a former mental patient is fit to stand trial on charges of hacking a psychotherapist to death with a meat cleaver.

State Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon says he wants to see 40-year-old David Tarloff back on his psychiatric medicines before he orders an exam. He says Tarloff seemed stable previously when he was receiving medication.

Tarloff's lawyer, Bryan Konoski, says a defense psychiatrist has declared Tarloff mentally ill.

Tarloff is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 56-year-old psychotherapist Kathryn Faughey in her Upper East Side office on Feb. 12.

He is also accused of seriously wounding 70-year-old Dr. Kent Shinbach, who tried to help Faughey.
