Family, Friends Mourn Teen Who Drowned On L.I.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBS) ― On Long Island, a community is in mourning after a young boy drowned in Reynolds Channel off Long Beach in Nassau County.

Police said 14-year-old Leo Vann jumped into the water to cool off Friday afternoon but never re-surfaced. Witnesses believe he was overcome by the strong undercurrents and couldn't stay afloat.

Leo's friends made several attempts to save his life.

"Leo continued to tug his leg but leo couldn't get up. The other boy had to let him go or he would have also drowned," witness Denajah Merchant said.

"He couldn't come up, so my brother jumped in after and tried to grab him and he couldn't grab him anymore so he had to let him go," witness Amy Garcia said.

Rescuers found the child minutes later, but it was too late.

Leo's mother said her son was an excellent swimmer and had been in the water since he was two-years-old.
