NY Teen Charged With DWI In Motorcycle Accident

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBS) ―

A 19-year-old motorcyclist is charged with driving while intoxicated after his passenger fell off and was hit by a car.

The incident happened early Saturday in Smithtown on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say Steven Schwamb was stopped at a light on the Jericho Turnpike and when the light turned green he accelerated. His passenger, 16-year-old Alyssa Bennett, fell off.

A car struck Bennett as she was lying on the roadway. She was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where she was treated for a broken leg and possible broken ribs. Schwamb was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

The phone number at Schwamb's home was not listed.

Suffolk County has a police force of around 2,500 officers.
