Two people were shot outside a popular neighborhood deli in the East Village on Thursday morning.
The suspect, who family members say is emotionally disturbed, turned himself in a short time later. Police say the incident occurred at 8 a.m. outside the local business on Avenue D and 7th Street.
Police say the 36-year-old suspect shot two men with a rifle. Both are listed in serious condition at Bellevue Hospital.
It's not yet known if the victims knew the suspect. One neighbor told CBS 2 HD the news is shocking for residents and neighbors.
"I'm so shocked
this is a wonderful neighborhood...The entire neighborhood hangs out there...there's a community card game. I mean it's just a wonderful place," said the neighbor.
The unidentified suspect's mother says her son shot the men because he suffers from paranoia. She also said he's always needed long term "in-patient" mental health care.
