Whole Foods Recalls Contaminated Meat For E. Coli
By CBS 2's Carolyn Costello
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
About a million pounds of ground beef are being recalled on Saturday for possible E. coli contamination. And if you shop at Whole Foods, that meat could be sitting in your freezer.
CBS 2's Carolyn Costello spoke with Whole Foods customers who are surprised bad meat could have come from their trusted supermarket.
Whole Foods at Union Square was packed with loyal customers, who say they shop at the popular supermarket chain for a few simple reasons:
"They have better quality food, I trust them," David Sager of Texas told CBS 2 at Union Square's Whole Foods.
Many were surprised to hear the store is recalling beef that could be contaminated.
"Because you're coming to Whole Foods because you expect their food to be better," said Kim Sager.
"It's tragic because this is such an organic place we shop here all the time," said Karen Howard of Flatbush.
The store is voluntarily recalling the beef from stores in several states, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The meat was sold from June 2 to August 6. 9 Whole Foods customers, 7 in Massachusetts and 2 in Pennsylvania have gotten sick.
Whole Foods says the potentially contaminated beef was processed at Coleman Natural Beef, a plant in Nebraska that was linked to an E. coli outbreak this summer. It's been pulled from Whole Foods shelves.
Customers say they won't blame their favorite store, and they'll continue to shop there.
"What other choice do we have. There should be more government regulation on the matter, to protect us. That's what it's supposed to be there for," said Marcela Abramovich of Westchester.
The store is asking anyone who may have bought the beef between June 2 and August 6 to throw the beef away, and then take the package or receipt to any store for a full refund.
