Cops: Estranged Wife Tried To Burn House
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ―
A Long Island prosecutor says a woman poured lighter fluid on her estranged husband's infant and inside his home in a failed attempt to kill the husband, his girlfriend, the baby and her own two adult children.
Nassau County police say no one was injured in early Wednesday's incident.
Authorities say that after dousing the lighter fluid throughout the house, the woman, 49-year-old Esther Hershko, went outside to look for a match. That's when a neighbor called 911 to report a stranger acting suspiciously. Officers arrested her nearby.
Hershko wore a hospital gown to arraignment on Thursday and was ordered held without bail. Her Legal Aid attorney says she has cancer.
Hershko was charged with five counts of attempted murder, burglary, attempted arson and possession of a dangerous weapon.
