A family that had been desperate and waiting for word from two brothers, visiting here from their home in Virginia, who vanished without a trace on Tuesday, got the good news they had been hoping for late Thursday when the boys turned up in a subway at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue.
The boys were last seen inside their grandmother's apartment in Morningside Heights when they suddenly disappeared.
Grandmother Monique Louis had last seen her grandchildren Tuesday night, but they turned up in the subway some 100 blocks away on Thursday evening. Police say the boys are in good condition.
Michael Louis, 13, and his 8-year-old Jeffrey were playing Nintendo when Monique left the room to take a shower.
Ten minutes later, she came out and the boys along with their Nintendo were gone. CBS 2 spoke to the grandmother through a family friend and translator.
"She thought maybe they were playing a game, hiding," Louis said through the translator.
According to police, it appears that the boys unlocked the apartment door, headed down three flights of stairs, and left through the building's front entrance.
Why they left and who if anyone they were with remains a mystery.
"They have nowhere to go," Louis said. "Not knowing is the fear."
Until recently, the children lived and went to school in the area. They moved with their father to Virginia in October but were visiting their grandparents, Monique and Gerard Louis, for the last two-and-a-half weeks.
"They came here to spend time with [their grandparents] on vacation," Louis said. "They would never leave the house or run away."
After the boys went missing, they were spotted in the neighborhood, where someone saw them at a McDonald's Tuesday night.
The boys' father was expected to arrive tonight from Virginia on Thursday night.
The whole family had been wondering if the children were abducted, if they were lost, or if they were just wandering the streets.
