Two Metropolitan Transportation Authority board members are joining a chorus of people questioning a proposal to raise bus and subway fares in New York City.
Norman Seabrook and Mitchell Pally say they want to hold off the potential fare hikes until April or later so the agency can push for more city and state money. The agency is holding public forums next month on the proposed hikes.
Some state lawmakers and transit advocates have asked the MTA to abandon the plan.
The MTA says it needs more money because it's facing what could be $6 billion in budget deficits over four years.
It's looking at two ways to raise fares. Both would increase bus and subway fares from $2 to $2.25. But one would add a new provision for lower fares if riders travel during off-peak periods. The agency is also planning toll increases for bridges and tunnels.
