Poll Finds Most NYers Balking At Gov's 'Fat Tax'
But Even More Want Millionaires To Hand Over Bigger Share Of Earnings
NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ―
A new poll shows a majority of New Yorkers balking at Gov. David Paterson's proposal to impose a "fat tax" on sugary sodas, but even more want millionaires to hand over a bigger share of their earnings to the tax collector.
The Quinnipiac University poll reports 64 percent of registered New York voters oppose the governor's plan to help combat widespread obesity among children and others through an 18 percent tax on sugary drinks containing less than 70 percent real fruit juice. The poll shows 32 percent favor the soda tax.
Support for raising taxes on those with income more than $1 million a year stood at 80 percent, with 16 percent opposed.
Quinnipiac says it surveyed 1,664 voters from Jan. 8-12 and the poll has a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
