Firefighter Trainee Dies After Drill
NEW YORK (AP) ―
The FDNY said a 33-year-old probationary firefighter collapsed and died following an 18-minute training exercise while wearing about 100 pounds of gear.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that Jamel Sears, a Bronx resident, also had served overseas in the Navy. Survivors include his wife, Sherita Sears, who's a police officer, their two children, and his mother. Bloomberg asked New Yorkers to pray for the family.
The Fire Department said Sears' colleagues tried to revive him, but he died at the hospital on Tuesday.
Said Bloomberg: ''It just reminds us that we have so many people that try to make a difference in this city Jamel was one of them and some of them pay a terrible price.''
