Despite Heroic Rescue, NYC Fire Turns Fatal
Good Samaritan Saves The Lives Of At Least 2
NEW YORK (AP) ―
A Brooklyn man rescued two neighbors from a burning building -- but says he'll always be plagued by thoughts of the man he couldn't save.
The good Samaritan, Chakka Bess, climbed a fire escape and smashed a window to rescue a woman and a 15-year-old from the Bedford-Stuyvesant building.
Bess also climbed onto an adjacent roof while trying to get to the woman's husband, who was clinging to a window sill 40 feet off the ground. But the man fell before Bess could reach him.
Despite his heroism, Bess said: "I'll never be able to forgive myself, no matter how hard I know I tried."
The cause of the Tuesday night fire is under investigation.
