Fire Ejects Jersey City Families From Their Homes

5 People Injured

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBS) ― A huge fire in Jersey City left several families homeless Monday.

Flames started shooting from the roof of a house on Saint Paul's Avenue. Fanned by strong winds, the fire gutted two homes and left another two badly damaged.

"What the firefighters have been doing is not only to try and keep the flames from spreading to either side. They're using it as points to fight the fire from," Mayor Healy said.

"It burning middle house the white one then my house the side is the burning…They said we can't stay here any more," fire survivor Akhi Gomes said.

Five people suffered minor injuries including one woman who burned her hands and a firefighter who was treated for smoke inhalation.
