NJ Man Who Died In Poconos Stream Identified

DINGMAN'S FERRY, Pa. (CBS) ― Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have identified a New Jersey man who died as he was trying to aid another swimmer in a Pocono Mountains stream.

Pike County Coroner Kevin Stroyan says 27-year-old Venatesh Sankar of Jersey City was swimming with friends at about 2 p.m. Friday in a pool at the base of a waterfall in Adams Creek in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Stroyan says another member of the group began to struggle, and Sankar tried to help but disappeared during the effort. A National Park Service spokeswoman says his body was recovered an hour later by a diver.

Stroyan calls the death "a tragic accident."

As of the last census, Pike County had a population of at least 46,302.
