Firefighters Barred From St. Patrick's Day Parade

Georgia Parade Organizers Blame Unruly Behavior

NEW YORK (AP) ― Scores of New York City firefighters are being barred from marching in a St. Patrick's Day parade in Georgia because of what organizers claim was drunken misbehavior in past parades.

The FDNY Emerald Society's Pipes and Drums band will still be welcome to perform in this year's parade in Savannah, Ga. But parade committee chairman John Forbes says rank-and-file New York firefighters will have to step aside.

More than 100 New York firefighters generally take part in the Savannah parade.

Long calls the ban "very unfortunate," but he says the committee was troubled by reports of firefighters drinking while marching and tossing Mardi Gras-style beads into the crowd.

FDNY spokesman Jim Long says the Emerald Society will represent "the best of the FDNY."
