Francis Bacon Art Could Go For $70M At NYC Auction

NEW YORK (AP) ― A three-panel masterpiece by Francis Bacon is going on sale in Manhattan. It could fetch $70 million, which would be a record for the British artist.

Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976" (TRIP'-tik 1976) is being offered Wednesday night at Sotheby's auction house.

Another work -- Mark Rothko's "Orange, Red, Yellow" -- could bring $30 million to $40 million at the same auction. On Tuesday night, a 1952 Rothko painting called "No. 15" sold at Christie's for $50.4 million.

Bacon's triptych has been owned by the same collector for more than 30 years. It was purchased in 1977 from the Galerie Claude Bernard in Paris.

The current auction record for a Bacon work is $52.7 million, for his "Study for Innocent X, 1952." It was sold at Sotheby's last May.
