Three Quiet N.J. Towns Plagued By Group Of Vandals
GARFIELD, N.J. (CBS) ―
While residents in three quiet New Jersey towns slept, a group of vandals went around smashing windows and damaging cars. The towns of Garfield, Lodi and Saddle Brook were all hit by vandals, totaling thousands of dollars in destruction.
A shattered windshield and a big mess are what Robert Jackson discovered after he ran outside his Garfield home to investigate a loud noise early Wednesday morning.
"I heard a boom, and I looked outside. Then I came out and saw a truck and tried chasing the truck up the hill," said victim Robert Jackson.
After failing to catch the vandals, Jackson noticed that the front of his Lexus was damaged by two lion figurines, which were stolen from someone else's home.
"It looks like kids have a little too much time on their hands and decided to create a little mischief," said Garfield Police Chief Kevin Amos.
Police say the vandals struck four times before the sun came up in Garfield. They even sent a large rock through Joseph Balbach's front window.
"We're going to move. How many times should we go through this," said Balbach.
But the destruction didn't begin or end in Garfield. Residents in nearby Lodi and Saddle Brook also woke to find their property damaged.
On Pasadena Avenue in Lodi, police say a heavy bench was taken from someone's front lawn, carried about 50 yards and then thrown onto his Mercedes, damaging it and the car parked behind it.
"These kids should be put away and learn their lesson," said victim Angelo Tempio.
Police in all three towns are working together, but admit they have few leads.
A total of ten cars and homes were vandalized in all three towns. Anyone with information on who the vandals might be is asked to call police.
