Cuomo: Gas Stations On L.I. Overcharging Customers
NEW YORK (AP) ―
New York state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says Long Island is a "hotbed" for gas stations that engage in deceptive practices, including illegally overcharging customers who pay by credit card.
Cuomo said Thursday his survey of 120 stations found that 43 overcharged credit card customers. New York law prohibits retailers from imposing an additional surcharge on credit card customers who already pay a premium to credit card companies.
In some cases, Cuomo's office says, those customers were overcharged as much as 12 cents more a gallon than those paying in cash.
Cuomo's survey also found instances of false advertising at Long Island stations, including luring customers to the pump by posting the lowest price but not disclosing it was for cash transactions only.
