Police: 9-Year-Old Boy Brings Loaded Gun To School

Child Faces Serious Charges After Cocked Weapon Found In His Backpack

PLAINFIELD, N.J. (CBS) ― A 9-year-old boy is facing serious charges after allegedly bringing a loaded gun, cocked and ready to fire, to school.

The weapon was allegedly found Tuesday at Clinton Elementary School after the child's grandmother apparently caught word that the boy was carrying it in his backpack. Parents received the startling news today.

"This is crazy. What are these parents doing? I check my daughter's backpack every single day," said Plainfield resident Sonya Privott.

According to reports, the boy's grandmother, who was visiting the school yesterday, was tipped off by another student that a .45 caliber semiautomatic gun loaded with one bullet was in her grandson's backpack in his locker. She questioned him, and found the gun loaded and cocked with the bullet in the chamber.

Christine Ruzicka was going to register her 9-year-old daughter at the school Wedneday, but is having second thoughts. "We have the Board of Education number. We are going to call them and see where else we can send her," she said.

The boy is charged with possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm on school property. Parents tell CBS 2 they didn't think the boy was a troublemaker, but are wondering what he was doing with a loaded gun in the first place.

He's scheduled to appear in juvenile court Wednesday.
