Police are desperately looking for the hit-and-run driver who killed a New York City mother.
Witnesses say the vehicle was traveling fast early Monday morning when it struck and killed the woman on Amsterdam Avenue and 145th Street in Hamilton Heights.
"She was my daughter, and I loved her very much," mother Ethel Carter says.
Carter says she spent many nights worrying about her daughter's well-being, and that now her worst fears have been realized. 48-year-old Debbie Evans, who struggled with her own demons for decades, was killed in the hit-and-run accident.
"The car was going faster than what it should be, and she was in the middle of the street," a witness said. "It was a gray SUV, foreign-made, like a Honda or Toyota."
Witnesses said one of the vehicle's side-view mirrors broke off during the impact.
One of the victim's sandals was still on the street hours later on Amsterdam Avenue, marking the approximate location of where she was struck. There's a surveillance camera across the street that authorities hope will be able to help the investigation.
"I hope they catch the killer," friend Stacey Diggs said. "He's heartless."
"I want the perso who hit her to come forward, turn himself in," Carter said. "Everybody makes mistakes my daughter made plenty. I loved my daughter very much."
It's a family tragedy that tested, but never overcame, a mother's love for her daughter.
Witnesses say the driver was going at least 45 to 50 miles per hour when the vehicle struck Evans.
