Disabled 11-Year-Old Handcuffed In School On L.I.
Edgar Leon-Caraballo Violently Taken Down After Refusing To Drop Small Rock; Mother Suing Cops, School District
HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (AP) ―
A mother says her learning-disabled son was forced to the ground and roughly handcuffed for refusing to drop a small rock he'd picked up at his Long Island school.
Suffolk County police Commissioner Richard Dormer said Thursday an officer cuffed the 11-year-old only to keep him from hurting himself.
Rosa Caraballo filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Aug. 7 against defendants including Suffolk police and the Huntington School District. She says the May 2007 incident at Huntington Intermediate School caused "extreme emotional distress" for her son, Edgar Leon-Caraballo.
School district officials haven't returned telephone calls seeking comment.
The lawsuit says Edgar was subjected to excessive force and was unlawfully detained. It seeks unspecified damages.
